Lake- Roger Miller
This song is my favorite off of the album that came out earlier this year, Giving and Receiving. How can any English major resist that first verse. And I'm not even a Hemingway fan. ( ;__; Sorry, gods of the American literary canon).
Here is a beautiful description of the lyrics by Ashley Eriksson of Lake: The experience of art can be so overpowering. I’m the kind of person that starts crying during the trailers before a movie even starts. Once I went to an art museum and cried uncontrollably while staring at a field painting by Morris Louis. Another feeling that people have when they experience art is that the artist has somehow channeled the listener/viewer or that they are talking about the listener/viewer, personally. Rather than feeling “This is like me” they actually think “This is me.”
Acid House Kings- I Just called to Say (Something in Swedish*)
Dare you to feel sad while listening to this. I dare you.
*for those curious and not linguistically inclined, he is calling to say he loves you. yay, google translate!
Open Melody 2011 was great fun. If you missed it, here's a recap biased toward my favorite events of the night. Frank Fairfield was my far and away my favorite. Sir Richard Bishop was also amazing, though I was pretty sleepy by the time his set rolled around. And Let's Paint TV was, of course, an entertaining experience! You can see what the audience experienced (or more specifically Mr. Paint, himself) on the point of view video below. Make it out to next year's y'all. And until then keep checking Acrobatics Everyday for more awesome events in the Irvine area.
Frank Fairfield- 9 Pound Hammer
Frank Fairflield- Call Me a Dog When I'm Gone
Sir Richard Bishop of Sun City Girls- Esoterica of Abyssinia
Taken last night by Mr. Paint's helmet camera. Skip to 8:50 for small fire.
The truly talented Scottish singer-songwriter, Bert Jansch, passed away this past Wednesday after a battle with cancer. His contribution to folk music with Pentangle and through his own work has been prolific, and his style is echoed in the music of his contemporaries and those that followed.
From the guardian.co.uk: Those he influence included Jimmy Page, Nick Drake, Graham Coxon, Donovan, Bernard Butler and Paul Simon. According to fellow guitarist Johnny Marr: "He completely reinvented guitar playing and set a standard that is still unequalled today... without Bert Jansch, rock music as it developed in the 60s and 70s would have been very different."
"He is a hero of mine, one of my greatest influences. Bert was one of the all-time great acoustic guitarists and singer songwriters" -Neil Young
The music speaks better than I ever could so I hope you will take a moment to listen. Love you, Bert.
Oh my gosh, how did I go through life without knowing Honey Cone? Just saw this on related videos, and am super excited. Also, they are super smiley for being cheated on, but props for their sass.
Everyone and their uncles are excited about St. Vincent's newest release Strange Mercy (out today)! You can stream the whole thing here in case you need convincing.
First, thanks to Paul for being the most awesome "last show sub"/time slot successor ever! Stay tuned in the summer months from 6-8pm for his show Two Left Feet!
If anyone reads this, I just want to say this has been one awesome trip the last few years! I have made the best of friends with some of the folks here at KUCI, and it was truly one of the best things that I have done in both college and my life. Thanks to those who welcomed me in at the station, and made it the awesome experience that it was. And also thanks to those who made what we were/are doing a little more worthwhile by listening :). I don't know if I can totally just say goodbye, so I might be back in a couple of years! and in the meantime, stay tuned to this blog to find more musical goodies, and to see when I will be making sub appearances at KUCI (on Paul's show ;) )

If you haven't completely discounted my music taste after my last post, here is some stuff i liked in 2010. Since a lot of the artists I liked came out with two releases I'm grouping them together because I'm lazy and BECAUSE I CAN.
4) Dustin Wong: Let It Go & Infinite Love
I have to say I think I like Infinite Love best out of the two-- it was released as two different discs, "Brother" and "Sister" that begin the same way and then branch off in different directions. Dude also gets award for fave show of the year-- partly cuz it was awesome, and partly because I can't remember going to very many others.
from "Brother" Disc 1
3) Pregnant: Liquidation on Swans & Regional Music
I really didn't remember Liquidations of Swans being released this year, but according to numerous sites I guess it just barely slipped in. Anyway both albums are phenomenal. Both out on Life's Blood.
**Favorite Track of the Year Alert**
2) Sufjan Stevens: All Delighted People EP & Age of Adz
I ended up listening to the EP more than the LP even though the LP seems to be everyone's fave. But both were great. Djohariah itself is enough to make me love the EP, the sucker is long, but if you've got patience it's the best thing off the album.
1) Shugo Tokumaru: Port Entropy. This is my favorite all-around album. Not released in the US til Feb, but has already been released in Japan. For some reason it feels nostalgic and sentimental even though it just came out. There is no way you can mope while listening to this album, awesome.
Favorite track by artist not in top 5:
Favorite "unreleased" track of 2010:
<3 you Mook, hurry and release something.
Other good things released this year: Jonquil, A Hundred Suns EP: Nice all around pop release, music for da beach. Ellie Fortune, Matriarch: Nice dude, nice voice, haunting folk music from Sacramento Antn Hrkwk, Thoroughbred released on life's blood Sun Kil Moon, Admiral Fell Promises James Blackshaw, All is Falling
